FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs)?

EACs are market-based instruments that represent one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable energy, tracked in a registry separately from the physical power. There are different types of EACs that go by different names around the world. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is the common name used in the US, while International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) are used in over 50 other countries, and Europe uses Guarantees of Origin (GOs).

How do EACs work?

Under the GHG Protocol, EACs can be used to reduce reported market-based Scope 2 emissions. When a company buys and retires an EAC, it gains the right to claim that clean generation as its own consumption.

Why should my company purchase EACs?

Purchasing EACs allows your company to lower its market-based Scope 2 emissions. Because your money flows to renewable generators, EACs also provide direct financial support for clean energy while giving you a recognized, auditable basis for the claims you make to customers, investors, and reporting frameworks.

What criteria do CNaught’s EACs meet?
